A precious friend

Dear Russell, you were a boss like no other, and we soon became a great friends.  You were immensely knowledgeable and well-read, I was always learning from you.  You were never shocked by my antics in my youth.  I could talk to you about anything, without judgement.

When another company offered me a job,  you told me to ‘go for it’ and ask for double my current salary. (You said it was a good move for me as they gave their staff Volvos - it was the 80s!)  I was terrified, but with your support, I did it - and they agreed!  This belief, and encouragement from you led to a whole new chapter for me.  You gave me wings and let me fly.

Your sense of fun was infectious - and what fun we had!  I have never laughed with anyone like I laughed with you.  You would light up a room, enthusiastically sharing a wealth of stories, which you told which such animated, vibrant detail.

At book fairs we worked hard (ish!), then partied until dawn.  I was in awe of your many talents, not least when you spontaneously burst into a beautiful rendition of “Danny Boy” one night at a company dinner.  Only with you, could I have tap-danced the length of the Independenza in Bologna in the early hours of the morning, knocking on doors and ringing bells as we went.

How blessed was I, that 30 years later, despite living hundreds of miles apart, we were still friends.  A warm and generous host, I am grateful to have had the chance to visit your hometown, where you lived with your treasured family.

You sprinkled joy and kindness wherever you went.  You enriched my life and gave me magical memories which I will never forget.  You will forever hold a special place in my heart.   I miss you more than words can say.  Rest in peace my dear friend. x
